FACE MASKS & RESPIRATORS
Face Masks and Respirators enable the wearer and their environment to reduce risk of contamination and infection due to their interaction. By blocking and filtering droplets, particles and airborne agents to various extends, the exposure to harmful substances and agents can be greatly reduced. Correct use of face masks is paramount to their effectiveness. Only touch the mask by the straps and only when putting it on and taking it off. Do not re-adjust the masks once wearing it. It is also important to note that a face mask or respirator by itself can never protect the wearer or their environment completely.

COMPARISON OF FACE MASKS & RESPIRATORS
There are two types of masks: surgical or medical masks and respirators. Each group has different purposes, standards and objectives. The main difference between the two is that surgical or medical masks only protect against "wet" transmission, where infectious agents are transmitted via “droplets”, while respirators to a certain extend, also protect against the inhalation of infectious agents that can be transmitted by “airborne” routes, i.e. viruses.
SURGICAL / MEDICAL MASKS
A medical or surgical mask is a disposable medical device that protects the wearer from infectious agents transmitted by “droplets”. However, it does not protect the wearer against “airborne” infectious agents and will therefore not prevent the wearer from being potentially infected by a virus. A surgical mask does two things:
- Prevents droplets of saliva or secretions from the upper respiratory tract when the wearer exhales. The surgical mask protects others and their environment (air, surfaces, equipment, surgical site). If worn by a contagious wearer, it prevents the wearer from contaminating his or her surroundings and environment.
- Protects the wearer from infection transmitted by “droplets” or splashes of biological fluids, but only if the surgical or medical mask has a waterproof layer.
KN95 / FFP2 RESIPIRATORS
A respirator is not a medical device per se, but rather a piece of personal protective equipment. It prevents the wearer from inhaling aerosols (dust, smoke, mist), vapors or gases (disinfectants, anaesthetic gases), as well as protect the wearer against infectious agents transmitted by “droplets”. However, unlike surgical masks, a respirator also protects the wearer from airborne infectious agents i.e. against contamination by a virus such as coronavirus, SARS, H1N1, etc to a certain extend.
